Entertainment News

Have you ever spent time at a public computer laboratory? Well with my computer being non-functional at the moment, I had to seek the aid of a public computer. I want to lead by saying the guy sitting 4 feet next to me is so LOUD when it comes to his horrible typing, I can’t help but giggle being the nerd I am…and some chick has been talking on her cellphone for the past 15 minutes. Apparently she has moved and now works in Orange County, THANKS! I was worried about your method of transportation and whether you had sufficient funds to support your “wheels.” Haha the asshole film vault librarian just walked past me, I guess he’s going to work.
Some have forgotten the benefits of this recent heat wave: hot weather = less clothing. As a great man once said, “SHOW ME WHATCHA WORKING WITH!!” enjoy the 3rd edition of Movie Menu: Entertainment News

-your podcast host,
John

p.s. I’ve just realized the best Entertainment news from this past week have 1 thing in common: THEY ARE ALL COMIC BOOK ADAPTATIONS. This edition is for you Z to geek-out.

July 16- July 24 Edition

  • Batman 2- The Joker: it was announced on Thursday that the role of The Joker in Batman 2 will be Heath Ledger. The obvious joke will be something referencing Ledger’s role in Brokeback Mountain, but the Movie Menu has more class than that. So Heath Ledger, are you going to rock out to Queen’s “we will rock you” while jousting Batman in the ass….oops, F^&K!! the gay innuendos with Heath Ledger are just too easy  (www.latinoreview.com)
  • Transformers: so it’s been a tough couple of weeks for Michael Bay in retaining his title as the “Worst Director not sucking the dick of Lucas/ Spielberg” but word out of Comic-Con has defused the flames temporarily. I refuse to publicize the crappy trailer for this movie but Michael Bay did get some GEEK POINTS when he hired Peter Cullen the original voice of Optimus Prime to reprise his role in this new adaptation. Word has also leaked out Michael Bay has invented a Pinto transformer named GORDITA  (www.cinecon.com)
  • The Incredible Hulk: Marvel Studios tried to save face recently when they hired director Louis Letterier (Transporter 1 & 2) to direct this new version of the Hulk. The script will be written by Zak Penn (X-Men 2 & 3) with no release date or casting news at the moment…So there’s a mock replica of The Hulk at Universal CityWalk, well I can’t help but laugh at the sight of it for couple reasons. 1: the movie was so bad, any image of The Hulk makes me laugh. 2: I once daydreamed the Hulk would grab that 100ft guitar in front of the Hard Rock Café and start jamming out to a pack audience of scared Japanese tourist. Perhaps taking them to a Men’s Warehouse to shop for pants  (www.themovieblog.com)
  •  The Spirit:  Frank Miller has signed on to write and direct this comic book adaptation of a masked detective named Denny Colt who was thought to have been dead, but now works for the Police Commissioner. No word how this movie will conflict with another Frank Miller film, Sin City 2, which is slated to come out 2007. At this rate they’ll run out of detective comic books for Frank Miller to direct and to which I will predict he’ll start adapting HENTAI novels  (www.cinemafusion.com)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: could ninjas possibly replace the public curiosity with midgets? I think there’s room for both, but this new CGI remake titled TMNT has just released its trailer and it looks freaking awesome. This film will be significantly darker than the previous comedic versions of the Ninja Turtles, but has a story that apparently will appeal to all ages according to director Kevin Monroe. I’ve always wondered which of any of the turtles would have a chance at scoring with April the reporter. My money is on Rafael although Splinter seems like a cock-blocker.  (www.filmforce.ign.com)

So we were by the pool this weekend and saw a lady swimming in the water. M Night Shyamalan asked us if we would be in the film, which we regretfully decline because..umm..how do we put this nicely..."we don't want him to ruin our careers before it even STARTED." So to sweeten the deal we agreed to take his daughters out in exchange for free tickets to his movie. Well we tried selling tickets, but no one would buy them, so we went to the see Shyamalan's new movie Lady in the Water in hopes of scoring with his daughters...HAPPY LISTENINGS, this is our audio recording of our date.

Maybe it was boredom or maybe empathy (--- most likely boredom) that has led me to create a site skeleton to explain how this website works. It's come to our attention, here at 4WP, that the people we are trying to reach are either tech-savvy (l33t) or tech-dummie (Id10t). Whatever the case may be, here's A Dummies Guide to Movie.Menu.Com:

Wamo!
Look! It's a tiny version of the website you are in!

So it's a pretty easy website but here's a breakdown of what you can find on the main (index.html) page. Let's start with the hardest part:

How to Subscribe

It's easier than you may think.

What you need: A brain (hopefully your own), a computer (like the one you are using) and iTunes from iTunes.com... you may also need a pair of eyes, but only one is necessary.

What do I click?
Ok, above all this site was built on the basis of dualities and trinities. I know most people don't understand this concept, and you don't have to. Just know that their are three icons (two that repeat and one standalone) that are placed on the site to get you to subscribe:

podcast now! This icon of an armless-legless-neckless-aura inducing man isn't just a funny looking picture, but a subscription button. By clicking on this image, your browser (the thing you use to look at the website) will ask you if you have iTunes installed---if you do, it'll open it and direct you to the Movie Menu display section. By simply pushing the Subscribe button, you would have subscribed and automatically download Movie Menu for free anytime you turn on iTunes.

The second button that repeats twice is this one:
Among all icons, I believe that this one is the most self-explanatory. It's simply the same as the Afro-Man icon just described.

What if I don't have iTunes?
Not to worry.

As you push the Subscribe button on the Movie Menu website, it will take you to "One Moment Please" page. Which will then ask you "Do You Have iTunes?" If you push "No" then it'll ask you to install it.

One Moment Please

On iTunes:
Never fear!

Many find comfort in alternative music software like Musicmatch, Winamp, and Windows Media. Here's the problem:

- Musicmatch (unless you pay $20) cuts songs in half, records MP3's slower and doesn't allow for podcast feeds.
- Winamp (simple and easy) is by far the crappiest piece of software out there. The great thing is it's so simple to use that my grandmother, who doesn't speak English and hates computers, can use it.
- Windows Media Player (omg!) doesn't make MP3's, doesn't allow for podcasts, and allows hackers to spam you.

Oh... I forgot, iTunes:
You don't have to pay for iTunes, copies MP3's better than any other application, downloads podcasts (video and audio) through RSS feeds all for f-cking free! Oh, and they don't report you to the RIAA for having pirated songs

podcast now!The End... or is it?

So remember, subscribing is easy---the hard part is being smart about it. Now go get 'em kids and remember: Give Afro-Man some love! And tell your friends about Movie Menu! Because Afro-Man loves you and Movie Menu does too! Now keep it real, and tell your friends about MovieMenu.Libsyn.Com!

Entertainment News

Do you ever wish you had a stalker? "1AM- John searches for a snack....2:34AM- John begins munching on some chocolate wrappers." I don't know if I would ever want to stalk anyone, cause I get bored of people pretty easily, but if the money is good or the chick is hot, call me (wink). Anyways...welcome to the 2nd edition of Movie Menu: Entertainment News and remember: "only you can prevent forrest fires...so don't FUCK it up aaaa-ight!!!"

July 12- July 15 Edition

  • J.J. Abrams : the creator behind Lord of the Flies and...oops! LoL I'm sorry, I meant to say Lost, Abrams created the telelvision show Lost, I always get those confused, (cough rip off cough) Anyways, Abrams becomes one of the richest Writer/ Producer/ Director by signing a 5 year deal with Paramount Pictures and a 6 year deal with Warner Bros. Together the contracts are worth $55 million, and that my friend means he's buying the tacos tonight.   (http://movies.yahoo.com)
  • The Eye : Lionsgate Film has picked up the scraps of this classic Hong Kong horror film with Tom Cruise producing and Jessica Alba starring in the film. How long until we see Tom Cruise dumping that dead weight Katie Holmes and upgrading to some prime rib Jessica Alba to promote this film. The "Alba CruiseLine" anyone?(www.cinecon.com)
  • The Prestige : Huge Jackman and Christian Bale battle it out ...as magicians!?!? Directed by Christopher Nolan in what could be his best film since Following ; is expected to hit theaters on October 27th, 2006 and the trailer is now online. Expect a large comic book/ geek constituency begging for these 2 actors to reprise this battle in a Wolverine vs Batman movie. (www.aint-it-cool-news.com)
  • Halo - the movie : what has been hyped as possibly being "the greatest video game movie" has once again been delayed as DB Weiss has been brought in to write a new script Rumors of Denzel Washington as Master Chief begin to circulate as the creators of Halo insist Master Chief will not show his face. No script-no director-no cast- no movie. Maybe someone will start a petition to get this movie out of these peoples' hands. (www.themovieblog.com)
  • Pirates of the Carribean : thanks to the GREATEST CREW OF COSTUME / SET DESIGNERS AND STYLIST this bad film has looted the box office. Domestically the film has collected $258 million in 10 days and it shows no signs of slowing down internationally. Imagine how much more money this film could have made if real Pirates didn't hijack a boat delivering the film, wannabe Pirates sneaking into theater showings, and "internet Pirates" downloading the movie. You're not a Pirate if you paid to see this movie...Rrrrrrrrrrr!!!(www.variety.com)

Podcasting is a community and there is no one we love more in the neighborhood than Los Angeles Podcasters: Ask a Ninja. We couldn't top this review- so why challenge a ninja...dude, they got skills...chicks did guys with skills. This is what podcasting is all about!

Superman Returns

            Planning for the podcast

Usually the movie will be picked on Monday, so that we can plan and research all week and podcast that weekend. However, for Superman Returns, that podcast was discussed very early on. It was anticipated to be one difficult show, because it was expected that this would be a movie everyone would like, which would cause less discussion. So information and facts were a necessity in order to keep momentum high.

            Day of Podcast

With the return of Mike Stand (hes not Superman or is he?) We were all set for this show. It is important to run tests when recording to make sure everything sounds right, and no background noise can be heard. Most of the time, the funniest test run will be part of our outro, which is the ending of our show. We usually try to think of unique intros and have about five or six taglines, and the best one will make it on the show. Sound guy Z gives us a 5 second countdown and the banter begins.

            Post Production

Since the show is unscripted, we usually only go on one take, which takes about a half an hour or so. Once we finish, we almost immediately start the editing process and as well as getting the website ready for production. Whatever we dont finish on Saturday, we will finish on Sunday in order to have it on the website Sunday night or Monday morning.

Walking into any Keanu Reeves movie the word that often-wise jumps to mind, (and I'm sure in many others, as well), is "Whoa!" and then expect a ridiculously budgeted movie based on a book. In the case of the Matrix trilogies, inspired by Plato's "Allegory of the Cave, it proves that Reeves is a one trick fish in a digitally craptaculous movie. In the case of Phillip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly, however, Reeves sacrifices that trend almost instantly... even though he'll always be Ted to me.

"What does a scanner see? Does a scanner see into me? Into us? Clearly or darkly?"
                        -- Phillip K. Dick

Let me make this simple and clear for fans who are thinking about A Scanner Darkly: watch it! --but watch it at your own discretion. This movie isn't for those who are interested in watching an action-filled science-fiction movie. Scanner is a science-fiction movie that’s as dirty and gritty as a British gentleman’s teeth, but delivers with the freshness of an Orbits gum commercial. Don't expect a movie with simple dialogue either, this movie will have you jumping from line to line, taking in more concepts and theories than a standard psychology class. And just like a psychology class, it will have you wondering about all those drugs you've taken for "recreational" reasons.

A Scanner Darkly is a movie about drugs and the way they fuck up your perception of life...

The movie is based in the "near future" where the U.S. government has lost the war against drugs to a new poison named Substance D. The story follows an undercover cop, Bob Arctor (Reeves), who is assigned to increase surveillance on the house he is spying on. Little does the government know that the person leading the house is Bob Arctor. Bob Arctor is assigned to spy on Bob Arctor, and Bob Arctor is being spied on by Bob Arctor. Oh, and Arctor is a drug junkie who is slowly loosing his mind. This movie is fucking awesome! To top it off, the movie is shot in what's known as "interpolated rotoscoping" which is another way of saying live-motion cell-shading, kind of like "Viewtiful Joe" the video game.

A Scanner Darkly is adapted and directed by Richard Linklater-- of famed movies as "Dazed and Confused" (for those stoners out there), "Before Sunrise" (for those chick-flick-watchers), "Waking Life" (for those indie-kids) and "School of Rock" (Jack Black, need I say more?)--he takes Phillip K. Dick's book and translated it into this beautiful cell-shaded reality that makes you doubt what you are looking at: is it a real shot or is it animation? As result, I felt interpolated rotoscopic myself walking out of the theater (...meaning I had bad gas and had to pee really badly).

If there was a movie I'd compare this to it would be Requiem for a Dream. It's basically the same tale concerning drugs (they're bad for you, pe-o-ple!)-- Thankfully, it doesn't leave you with that same suicidal tendency. The movie's cast was brilliant and executed every scene with finesse (is it weird to think Wynona Ryder looked hot as a cartoon-ish character?).

If the cast doesn't fancy your interest than the music will definitely make your ear scream for more (as if ears scream?). Thom Yorke and Radiohead provide for the majority of music in the background and give off the same disillusionment their music often does.

---
And that's it; thanks for letting me waste your time... now go on, watch the movie, come back, and give your own review of the movie through the comment section.

Coming Soon…

The movie for this week will be THE OH IN OHIO directed by Billy Kent and written by Adam Wierzbianski. It has a promising cast starring Parker Posey, Paul Rudd, Mischa Barton, Danny DeVito, and Liza Minnelli. The movie is about this woman who is happily married but has never had an orgasm. She embarks to find an orgasm while her husband searches to prove his manhood.

I decided to pick this movie for our next Podcast because the cast alone is amazing. Though I go into movies with no expectations, this movie seems like a movie that we will have no problem discussing. Parker Posey a lone we can chitchat for hours, but add Danny Devito and Paul Rudd in the mix, and chaos ensues.  So look for THE OH IN OHIO  to be the NEXT podcast.

Production Notes (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift)

            Planning the Podcast

Monday came and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift was on the list for our next Podcast. Knowing this movie would raise opinions, not much research was necessary, besides trying to research; “why Tokyo?” Once we figured that there was no reason of why, we planned understanding the movie by eating lots of Japanese food. Though we’re not experts, eating a lot of Japanese did not help out our experience with the movie, which meant, we had no choice but sit and watch it.

            Day of Podcast

Since our dear friend Mike Stand temporarily died, it was up to John and Danny to bring some insight on Tokyo Drift. Setting up was interesting, because it was the first show that would only have two panelists, instead of the magical number THREE. Though low expectations were anticipated, (just like the movie), for only having two panelists, the energy was high. Though it was a challenging Podcast to do, Movie Menu feels the show was good enough to post.

            Post Production

Once finished, we had to decide how we wanted to approach this. We expected ten minutes tops, and actually had a twenty minute podcast. So much editing was needed in order to make the show a success. Though we were down one man, the dedication was there and only took us 3 weeks to finish, (ok well not really), but even if the movie didn’t have high expectations, doesn’t mean the Podcast of that movie should also have low expectations, so we had to step it up a notch…or not…you decide J.

FAQ: PODCAST

WHY?!
Calm down... I know life can be tough but if ever you feel the need to question anything, remember that the answer to all things is 42.

What is a 'Podcast'?
Remove yourself from that warm vat of simplicity and let me tell you a tale about the future...actually, it starts in the past, but we'll skip that.

Podcasting is a new way of distributing audio/video content over the internet using rss feeds. In laymen terms, Podcasting is a newspaper and rss is the paperboy; in this case, however, the newspaper is free and the paperboy is a mean looking cyborg that speaks chinese, likes cross-dressing, and eating Ethiopian babies.

Luckily for you, you'll only be listening.

Do I need an iPod to listen?
Absolutely not. You don't need an iPod to join in. The term 'podcast' is a misnomer and a portmanteau all in one... kind of like Bennifer, Bradjalena, or Herpes.

How do I listen?
That's the easy part: you can download through our direct link on the website (below the poster and synopsis) or you can subscribe through iTunes and listen on your computer.

We highly recommend you download through iTunes because it'll automatically download it for you whenever we upload a new podcast.

----

FAQ: MOVIE MENU/4th WALL PRODUCTIONS (4WP)

WHY?!
42

When will the new episodes be uploaded?
We're shooting for sunday night/monday morning releases... we want to provide an interesting start for your work week.

How much for subscription?
As the internet moved into its socialist manifestation, everything is free!

What are all these other sections about?
Week's Special is the podcast forum page. The Guilty Party is our biography section. Production Blog are production notes concerning our inner struggles and timelines for people interested in learning how difficult one show can be to produce. Random is the golden gem of our site: it'll provide extra movie reviews provided by our host; daily blogs by a few of us; vlogcasts; and interesting show links.

... and you are reading the FAQ page.

Why is the site green?
Gamma radiation accident.

What's with the food plates?
The concept of doing this podcast was discussed in a dinner, so we pay omage to the restaurant business.

Can you post the name of the plate?
I wish I knew what they were... I'm sure they're pricy.

Can we expect more?
HELL YES! Our goal is simple: content, content, content! ... and for the Podcasters (because you are one, once you start), all content should always be FREE!
